Four freed men buy 160 acres and start Fifth Street
1891
Stafford, Texas
Four men who had been enslaved bought 160 acres from Amanda Cartwright on the edge of Stafford in 1891 and settled their families on it. Black landowners were already turning up in Stafford's census returns in the 1870s, and Sherman Gibbs added forty acres of the David Bright league nearby. A Farmers Improvement Society branch opened a cemetery on Gibbs land in 1912, known over the years as New Hope and as the Stafford Colored Cemetery. The settlement never incorporated and still has a Stafford mailing address, and the county has funded a memorial park to the freedmen's town underneath it.
