Hahne and Company, the store that stood empty for thirty years

Julius Hahne opened a specialty shop in 1858 that grew into Newark's grandest department store, and in 1901 it moved into a Broad Street building of 441,000 square feet with an atrium and its own dining rooms. May Department Stores retired the name in 1989 and the flagship was left to rot for about three decades, a dead block in the middle of downtown. It reopened in 2017 holding a grocery, apartments of which forty percent are affordable, and a Rutgers arts centre.
