Marshall Field's builds a small copy of its State Street store in Oak Park

When Field's decided the suburbs were worth a department store of their own, Oak Park and Evanston got the first big ones, each built as a scaled down version of the State Street flagship and near twins of each other. People who had taken the train into the Loop to shop could now buy the same goods on Lake Street. The store traded here until 1986, when the chain's owners closed it as outdated and expensive to run. A Borders held the building until 2011, and shops and offices fill it now.
