J. Kurtz and Sons, Art Deco furniture on Jamaica Avenue
1931
Jamaica, Queens, New York

Jacob Kurtz began selling furniture in New York in 1870, and by 1931 the firm was confident enough to put up this six storey Art Deco store. Two of its faces carry cast aluminium pylons with geometric ornament running up through four floors. Jamaica Avenue was then the shopping street for the whole eastern half of Queens, and buildings like this were built to prove it. It is a chain clothing store today.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
