Galena Park takes its name from an oil company

Ezekiel Thomas took a Mexican land grant on this bank of Buffalo Bayou in 1824 as one of Stephen F. Austin's colonists, and by 1833 the settlement was called Clinton. Farming gave way to refining once the port opened, and the first plant here belonged to the Galena Signal Oil Company. The post office refused the name Clinton because another Texas town already held it, so in 1935 the town renamed itself after the refinery.
