Kenilworth, the planned village with restrictions in its deeds

Joseph Sears bought 224 acres north of Wilmette in 1889 and laid out the newest and smallest of the nine North Shore villages, with large lots, no alleys and a rule about who could buy. Racial and religious restrictions appear in Kenilworth deeds from the 1920s, and the village stayed almost entirely white for decades. When Harold and Lillian Calhoun became its first Black homeowners, someone burned a cross on their lawn in May 1966. Two teenagers from Highland Park later confessed and apologised to Harold Calhoun in person.
