After the Spanish American War the Army decided Baltimore needed real coastal guns, and it put them on the same tip of land the British had used to come ashore in 1814. Reinforced concrete batteries went up in 1902 carrying twelve inch disappearing rifles and mortars, manned by four Coast Artillery companies on 200 acres. Aircraft made the guns pointless, and by 1940 the Veterans Administration had the site, opening a veterans hospital here in 1943 while the fenced grounds also held German prisoners and interned enemy aliens. The batteries became a county park in 1975.
