Fort Armistead was one of the coastal batteries the Army built around the turn of the century to cover the ship channel into Baltimore, sitting on Hawkins Point across the Patapsco from Fort Howard and Fort Carroll. It took its name from George Armistead, the major who held Fort McHenry through the 1814 bombardment. The Army kept it active from 1901 to 1920, a span that carried it through the First World War. The old batteries now sit inside Fort Armistead Park, a Baltimore city park at the river's edge.
