Union guns take Relay to hold the B&O

Relay was the busiest stop on the Baltimore and Ohio outside Baltimore itself, and the junction was Washington's only direct rail link to the north. On 5 May 1861 Benjamin Butler occupied it with the 6th Massachusetts, the 8th New York and a Boston artillery battery, putting cannon on the hills above the Thomas Viaduct. Eight days later he used Relay as the staging ground for seizing Federal Hill and holding Baltimore for the Union.
