Fort Manhassett covers the back way into Sabine Pass
1863
Sabine Pass, Port Arthur, Texas
Dowling's victory did not solve the obvious problem, which was that a landing party could come ashore west of the pass and walk in behind the guns. The Confederates threw up a line of earthen batteries along the beach in October 1863 and held them until the war ended in May 1865. The name came from a Union schooner, the Manhasset, that had grounded nearby.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
