Santa Monica Airport sends off the first flight around the world
1924
Santa Monica, California
Clover Field opened in 1923 and Donald Douglas built his aircraft alongside it. On 17 March 1924 four Douglas World Cruisers and eight Army crewmen left the field for Seattle, the official start of an attempt to fly around the planet. Three of the aircraft finished the circuit 175 days later after 74 stops. The city has scheduled the airport to close at the end of 2028.
