Barren Island, where the city rendered its dead horses

From the 1850s the island took the carcasses of the city's dead horses and processed them into industrial products, alongside plants rendering fish caught in the bay. Up to 1,500 people lived out there in a mixed community later called South Flatlands. A garbage incinerator ran from the 1890s until the complaints about the smell closed it in 1921. Most residents were evicted in the late 1920s to build Floyd Bennett Field and the last were gone by 1942.
