Fleming Island keeps the name of an Irish land grant

George Fleming left Ireland, served the Spanish crown in East Florida and was granted a thousand acres on the west bank of the St Johns for it. He called the plantation Hibernia, the Latin name for Ireland, and the island took his family name instead. It now holds a suburb of about thirty thousand people, with the plantation ground at the southern end.
