Newton Colony and the Irish coins that were legal tender in New Jersey
1682
Collingswood, New Jersey
Quakers who had fled England for Ireland and then fled Ireland settled Newton Creek in 1682, the third English settlement in West Jersey. One of them, Mark Newby, arrived with a supply of Irish St Patrick halfpence, and on 18 May 1682 the West Jersey assembly made his coppers legal tender in place of wampum. It is usually counted as the first banking operation in the colonies. The colony's ground is now Collingswood, Oaklyn and Haddon Township.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
