Commerce, the river town that Cape Girardeau beat
1788
Commerce, Scott County, Missouri
One of the oldest European settlements on this stretch of the Mississippi, laid out on a Spanish grant and busy enough as a steamboat landing to expect a future. The railroads went to Cape Girardeau instead and the river took the rest, and what is left is a few streets on a bank where a city was supposed to be.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
