Avondale Shipyard, once the largest private employer in Louisiana
1939
Avondale, Louisiana
Avondale opened on the west bank in 1939 and grew to about 26,000 workers at its height, the largest private employer in the state. It built LASH lighter aboard ships and rebuilt the battleship USS Iowa in the early 1980s. The last naval vessel, the USS Somerset, sailed out on 3 February 2014, and Huntington Ingalls closed the yard that October after 75 years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
