The Navy buys 500 acres of Oakland wetland for one dollar

West Oakland, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
In 1940 the Navy bought 500 acres of marsh from the city of Oakland for a dollar, filled it and covered it with warehouses. The depot opened on 15 December 1941, eight days after Pearl Harbor, and became the main supply source for ships working the Pacific. It went on expanding through the Cold War as one of the Navy's most important supply installations before closing in the 1990s.
