Ferry Street, the Portuguese spine of the Ironbound

The neighbourhood is called the Ironbound for the foundries and the ring of railroad track around it, and Down Neck for the bend the Passaic makes here. Germans and Irish arrived from the 1830s, then Poles and Italians, then Portuguese families from the 1910s on, enough of them by 1921 to found Sport Club Portugues. Ferry Street became the commercial spine and still closes each June for the Portugal Day festival. Brazilian and Ecuadorian businesses now sit along it beside the Portuguese ones.
