House building on a large scale from the 1860s made Woodside the biggest Irish American settlement in Queens, and by the 1930s the neighbourhood was roughly 80 per cent Irish. Filipino families arrived in numbers in the early 1990s and Asian Americans are now about 30 per cent of the population. Roosevelt Avenue under the elevated carries the old Irish pubs and the Filipino, Thai and South American kitchens within the same few blocks.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
