Henry McShane, an immigrant from County Louth, set up a bell foundry on the Patapsco in 1856 out where nobody had built anything yet. When the railroad reached the foundry and asked for a depot name, the McShanes gave it the name of the town Henry came from and nailed the sign to a tree. Steel and shipbuilding turned the depot into the largest unincorporated community in Maryland by 1960, and one of Baltimore's first inner ring suburbs.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
