Portugal Day takes over Ferry Street
1979
Ironbound, Newark, New Jersey
The Bernardino Coutinho Foundation started a Portugal Day street festival on Ferry Street in 1979, when the Ironbound was becoming the densest Portuguese neighbourhood in the country. It runs on the weekend closest to June 10 and organisers now count attendance in the hundreds of thousands. For one weekend the grills and the bacalhau stands take the street that trucks own the rest of the year.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
