West Vernor Highway, the commercial spine of Mexican Detroit
1920
Detroit, Michigan

Mexican families settled along West Vernor Highway in the 1920s, working the Rouge and the rail yards, and the storefronts followed. Three separate stretches of the road were listed on the National Register in 2002, including these six blocks of 28 buildings between Honorah and Norman. The strip has been continuously in business for a century under Polish, Hungarian and then Mexican ownership, which is the reason the buildings are still standing to be listed.
