Fernandina Beach airport started as a Navy field
1946
Fernandina Beach, Florida

The Navy laid this strip out during the Second World War as an outlying field for the Naval Air Station Jacksonville complex, somewhere to send student pilots so they were not stacking up over the main runways. The city took it over in 1946 and it now works as a general aviation reliever for Jacksonville International. Navy, Coast Guard and Florida Army National Guard helicopter crews still drop in to practise.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
