The city bought 276 acres at Araquay Park in 1933 for eight thousand dollars and put in a field. After Pearl Harbor the Navy took the whole thing, renamed it Naval Auxiliary Air Station St. Augustine and ran it as a gunnery satellite for the much larger station at Jacksonville, adding runways, hangars and a tower and training patrol bomber crews. The Navy gave it back to the city in May 1946, and Fairchild opened an aircraft plant on it in 1955.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
