Cecil Field grows into the Navy's largest master jet base

The Navy cut this field out of pine flatwoods in 1941 to train wartime pilots and made it a full air station in 1952, one of the handful of master jet bases built to fly carrier jets from shore. The complex reached almost 23,000 acres, took in an outlying field at Whitehouse, a weapons department at Yellow Water and a bombing range in the Ocala forest, and flew carrier attack and reconnaissance squadrons through the Cold War.
