Herlong Field goes from Navy training strip to city airport
1946
Jacksonville, Florida
The Navy built this strip in the westside pine woods during the Second World War so student pilots could practise landings away from the main station. The property went to the City of Jacksonville in November 1946 and was named for M. B. Herlong, a city commission chairman and state senator. It has been the westside's small general aviation field ever since, now run by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
