Coast Guard Air Station Miami moves to Opa-locka
1965
Opa-locka, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Coast Guard had flown from Dinner Key in Coconut Grove since 1932, but a seaplane base with no runways could not carry the rescue traffic coming out of the Florida Straits. The air station moved up to Opa-locka in November 1965 and is now the only military unit left at the field. It flies HC-144 patrol aircraft and MH-65 Dolphin helicopters.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
