Fallen Timbers
Maumee, Lucas County, Ohio
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Anthony Wayne's legion broke the confederacy led by Blue Jacket and Little Turtle in a stand of tornado-felled trees by the Maumee in August 1794, while the British at a nearby fort shut the gates on their retreating allies. The Treaty of Greenville that followed took most of Ohio, and the pattern, a battle, an abandonment, a treaty, a cession, became the template for everything west of it.
