Springwells, the springs that named a township and a treaty

French settlers called this riverfront belle fontaine for the freshwater springs running out of the ground here, and the English name stuck to the township that once covered most of what is now southwest Detroit and Dearborn. On 8 September 1815, on the riverbank south of here at what is now Fort Wayne, the United States signed the Treaty of Spring Wells with the Wyandot, Delaware, Seneca, Shawnee, Miami, Chippewa, Ottawa and Potawatomi, ending the War of 1812 for the tribes of the Northwest. It was the last peace treaty the federal government signed in Michigan. The neighbourhood that kept the name is now one of the centres of Mexican Detroit.
