After the disaster at the Wabash, Congress let Anthony Wayne pull his new army out of Pittsburgh and drill it somewhere the taverns could not reach. Through the winter of 1792 he trained recruits here in tactics and discipline, the first purpose-built basic training facility in American military history. The Legion of the United States marched out the following spring for the Northwest Indian War.
