The Battle of Bull's Ferry, and the poem it cost John Andre

On 20 July 1780 Anthony Wayne brought two Pennsylvania brigades and four guns against a Loyalist blockhouse guarding the woodcutting operation above this ferry landing. Seventy defenders under Thomas Ward held it, the bombardment failed and the assault was beaten off, so Wayne's dragoons drove off the British army's cattle instead. Major John Andre wrote a ballad mocking him for it, The Cow Chace, closing with a joke about whether Wayne would ever catch the poet. Andre was taken as a spy that September and hanged in October.
