Meacham Park, the Black settlement Kirkwood annexed and then cleared
1892
Kirkwood, Missouri
Elzey Meacham bought 150 acres here in 1892, cut it into small parcels and sold them cheap to buyers of modest means, most of them African American. The unincorporated community went decades without the services its neighbours had, and a highway later cut it off from the rest of Kirkwood. Voters approved annexation in 1991. Three years later the city approved the Kirkwood Commons shopping centre, and hundreds of homes and Black owned businesses were taken by eminent domain to build it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
