McNair started in the 1920s as a Black settlement on the rail line four miles north of Baytown. Its population passed 1,300 by 1954, and highway maps of the 1980s still marked six churches, a railroad station and the Harlem School. Baytown annexed the community in 1960. Much of the land around it remains unincorporated.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
