The house behind Shelley v. Kraemer
1948
4600 Labadie Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri
J.D. And Ethel Lee Shelley bought this house in 1945 without being told the deed carried a covenant barring sale to anyone not white. A neighbour sued to take it back and the Supreme Court ruled in 1948 that while private parties could write such covenants, no court could enforce one, because enforcement would make the state a party to discrimination. The house is a National Historic Landmark and people still live in it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
