Jordan Mott's iron works names Mott Haven
1828
Mott Haven, the Bronx
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Jordan Mott moved his stove foundry to the Harlem River shore and built it into one of the largest ironworks in the country, running until 1906. He bought the land from Gouverneur Morris II, who was asked whether he minded the district taking Mott's name and said that while he was at it he might as well rename the Harlem River the Jordan. Mott Iron Works castings are still underfoot across the city in manhole and airshaft covers.
