Delray, the Little Hungary that Detroit annexed and then emptied

Platted in 1836 and named Delray in 1851, this stretch between Fort Street and the Detroit River filled with heavy industry in the 1890s and with Hungarian families right behind it. It incorporated as its own village in 1897, was annexed into Detroit in 1906, and by 1930 held about 24,000 people and the centre of Hungarian life in Michigan. The plants, the sewage works and the highways took the rest of the century to grind it down. The 2010 census counted 2,783 residents in the two tracts that cover it.
