Glenarden, lots sold to Black buyers that turned into a town
1939
Glenarden, Maryland
W. R. Smith bought land here in 1919, about ten miles east of Washington, and his development company marketed the lots specifically to African American buyers. By 1920 all but four of the twenty five households were Black. The civic association petitioned the state legislature and the charter came through in March 1939, making Glenarden the third majority Black incorporated town in Maryland, with W. H. Swann as its first mayor.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
