Addisleigh Park, the jazz colony of St. Albans

Addisleigh Park was a Tudor enclave that used racial covenants to keep Black buyers out until New York courts stopped enforcing them in the late 1940s. What followed was one of the densest concentrations of Black talent in the country. Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Fats Waller, Milt Hinton, John Coltrane, Jackie Robinson and W. E. B. Du Bois all lived within a few streets of one another. The city landmarked the district in 2011.
