Norristown has been the seat of Montgomery County since 1784, and the district listed on the National Register in 1984 takes in roughly 1,900 buildings across the business core and the streets behind it. The county courthouse and the county jail stand inside it, along with the Scheidt Brewery, an Odd Fellows hall, a YMCA and the 1931 Philadelphia and Western Railroad station. Workers' rowhouses and large merchant dwellings sit within a few blocks of each other, which is what a county seat that was also a mill town looks like at street level.
