The Hampton House, where Ali celebrated beating Liston and King tried out a dream speech
1961
Brownsville, Miami, Florida
Segregation kept Black travellers out of the Miami Beach hotels, so this Brownsville motel became the place visiting performers, athletes and organisers actually stayed. Muhammad Ali marked his 1964 win over Sonny Liston in the coffee shop with Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr ran South Florida strategy and press conferences from the property, delivering an early version of the dream speech there. Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and Ella Fitzgerald played the nightclub. It reopened as a museum and cultural centre and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
