An oystering village on the South Shore turned itself into a summer resort, and by about 1914 into an unofficial colony of stage people who wanted water and a train to the theatres. Will Rogers, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker and Victor Moore all kept places here, and the Lights clubhouse opened on Fairview Avenue in June 1916 as their meeting hall. The canals the developer John J. Randall dredged out of the marsh are the waterfront now sold as the Nautical Mile.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
