The Essex County Parks Commission was created in 1895 and its first act was this park, which makes it the first county park in the United States opened to the public. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux had looked the ground over back in 1867, and the Olmsted Brothers firm came in from 1900 to give the 360 acres the meadow and woodland shape it still has. Caroline Bamberger Fuld gave the cherry trees in 1927. The collection has grown past 5,000 trees in more than eighteen varieties, which is more than Washington has, and about 10,000 people come for the bloom each April.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
