A million acres of bottomland hardwood and cypress between two levees, the largest wetland in the country, kept as a designated floodway to take the Mississippi's overflow away from Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Crawfishermen, houseboat families and a whole way of living were pushed out of it as it was engineered, and it still absorbs whatever the river is told to give up.
