The magnolia tree that became a New York City landmark

A southern magnolia grown from a North Carolina seedling around 1885, on a street where the species has no business surviving the winter. When a parking lot threatened it, Hattie Carthan organised the block and put schoolchildren to work raising money, and in 1970 the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the tree itself. It is the only living thing on the city's landmark rolls, and Carthan went on to found the Magnolia Tree Earth Center behind it.
