Arthur Stilwell founds Port Arthur on the advice of his brownies

Stilwell needed a Gulf terminus for the railroad he was pushing south out of Kansas City, and in 1895 he platted one on the shallow west shore of Sabine Lake. He later wrote that the site, and most of his other business decisions, had been dictated to him by spirits he called brownies. The line became the Kansas City Southern, the town incorporated in 1898, and the Dutch bankers who financed the railroad got a settlement of their own a few miles north.
