Weedville, the broomcorn colony a Kansas preacher homesteaded outside Peoria
1911
Peoria, Arizona
A Methodist minister from Kansas named Ora Rush Weed brought part of his congregation here in 1911 and homesteaded land well past what was then the edge of Peoria. He grew broomcorn and built a factory to turn the stalks into brooms, hiring men who had learned the trade in prison workshops. The settlement kept the name Weedville long after Peoria grew out and absorbed it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
