Bergen Square, the first town in New Jersey
1660
Bergen Avenue at Academy Street, Jersey City, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
In November 1660 Peter Stuyvesant authorised a palisaded village on the ridge above the Hudson, laid out by the surveyor of New Amsterdam as a square eight hundred feet on a side with two streets crossing at the centre. That was Bergen, the first permanent European settlement in what became New Jersey and the first planned town square in the colonies. The charter required a school, and a school has stood on the square ever since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
