Zug Island and the hum that Windsor could hear

Zug Island is not a natural island. A shipping canal cut in the late 1800s separated it from the mainland so boats could skip a twisting stretch of the Rouge, and blast furnaces went up on the ground that was left. From about 2011 residents across the river in Windsor, Ontario, reported a low pulsing hum, and Canadian and Ontario studies concluded the likely source was furnace operations on the island, though investigators were never given access to the site to confirm it. The noise stopped in 2020 when steelmaking there shut down.
