The Carrie Furnaces, two blast furnaces left standing out of a valley full

The Carrie Furnaces were built in 1884 to feed iron across the river to the Homestead Works and ran until 1982, turning out 1,000 to 1,250 tons a day at their peak. Furnaces 6 and 7, which worked from 1907 to 1978, are all that survive, along with their own hot metal bridge. They were named a National Historic Landmark in 2006 and are among the very few blast furnaces built before the Second World War still standing anywhere in the country.
