River Rouge is a Downriver city of about seven thousand people, wedged between the Rouge, the Detroit River and the furnaces of Zug Island. Its high school has won more state basketball championships than any other school in Michigan. Under coach Lofton Greene the Panthers took five straight titles through 1965, and Willie Betts, who finished a fourth in 1964, remains the only Michigan athlete to play on four championship teams.
